GasHighWay

The long-term objective of the project is to promote the realisation of a comprehensive network of filling stations for biomethane and natural gas spanning Europe from the north, Finland and Sweden, to the south, Italy, in other words: the GasHighWay. The main target groups of the project are operators of vehicle fleets, municipal and regional authorities, and existing and potential biogas producers.

The project aims at stimulating the spread of best practices and best available technologies in the uptake of gaseous fuels in vehicles, the expansion of the gas filling station network and the production and upgrading of biogas to vehicle fuel as well as its delivery to customers in Europe, through for instance the following activities:

GasHighWay

  • a) promoting the implementation and expansion of distribution systems for gaseous vehicle fuels and removing barriers to investment in the fuel supply infrastructure by e.g. mapping the optimal locations for the filling stations, providing knowledge transfer and technical support for potential investors, and organising workshops with stakeholders, including industry and policy makers, in order to build consensus on common strategies for expansion of the gas filling station networks,
  • b) providing knowledge transfer and technical support to organisations interested in the uptake of gas vehicle fleets, and organising information and networking activities associated with exhibitions of gas vehicles,
  • c) providing knowledge transfer and technical support to potential and existing biogas producers in order to boost the investment projects,
  • d) communicating to key decision-makers and local authorities the main regulatory and market barriers hindering the development of the gas refuelling and biogas production/upgrading infrastructure, as well as gas vehicle uptake, and the key changes that would be needed,
  • e) creating a roadmap for the European GasHighWay, and
  • f) raising the awareness of the key target groups along with the general public and decision makers on the use of biomethane and CNG as vehicle fuel.

As result of these activities, the number of gas vehicles, gas filling stations and investment plans to initiate biogas production and/or upgrading will increase significantly in the main target countries, and the general acceptance and image of the gaseous vehicle fuels will improve.
